Of the few replacement pads I have put on my 1999 9-5, none have had the low-tech screechy "last chance before failure" metal tab. Nonetheless, you should pull off the wheel and check how much material you have left before it might be too late. As for pad cleanliness and easy rotor wear, I recently switched to Akebono Euro pads and Zimmermann cross-drilled rotors on the front. After 1,000 miles with this set-up I can highly recommend these pads as being real clean!!! The front wheels are nearly as clean as the rear wheels. My previous supposed ceramic formula PBR pads and Brembo rotors just blackened the alloy wheels within a few weeks and the rotors were wearing out and posssibly warped after only one year of normal driving. You'll absolutely love these Akebonos!! I've heard that the recent OEM Saab pad is actually an Akebono product, but not quite as dustless as the Euro model. It comes with a price at around $90 per front set of pads. Best of luck and keep us updated.
