Hi Carl,
My observation was that where there was oil flowing it was pretty clean, so I wouldn't worry about the varnish too much. Only where there is oil mist is there the varnish colour presumably eventually leading to black buildup. Piston skirts and cylinder walls are continually wiped clean.
Judging by the condition of your nice VERY low mileage unit, if you keep your PCV system checked and change your oil 6 monthly or 3500-5000 miles, I think you will never have a problem. It is only the combination of this enigne's poor PCV system and absurdly long recommended oil change intervals that lead to major problems.
Meanwhile I keep my fingers crossed that what is in my timing case does not lead to problems later, I'd prefer it to be perfectly clean, but I really think any sort of oil treatment will just dislodge heaps of that crap and drop it straight into your oil pickup screen. Maybe an extreme cleaning treatment followed by dropping/cleaning the sump/pickup would be ok. But really the only way to do it properly is to pull the motor and disassemble it (yuk+$$$). Knowing me I would then go to town on the motor "while I was at it", turning it into yet another of my projects, rather than my daily driver. :-)
Cheers
Steve
