Transmission Reliability: Manual v. Auto Posted by iveand [Email] (#3155) [Profile/Gallery] (more from iveand) on Mon, 20 Feb 2006 10:23:52 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
I continue to look into 9-5's even though I began my "next saab" search looking at 9000's. All things equal, I would want a manual. In the 9000 world, the autos have been suspect (although I think they were getting better at the end). Bottom line: for a 9000, I would DEFINITELY want a manual.
I was using the same line of thinking when starting to look at 9-5 wagons. Suprisingly, I recently talked with a highly regarded Saab shop here in MN (Andrews of Princeton - site sponsor!) who I know does great work and good research. They indicated that in the 9-5 world, the auto has been MUCH MORE reliable than the manual transmission. So much so that they have labeled it "essentially bulletproof". On the other hand, if a manual has 100K on it, they are mentally adding the price of rebuilt tranny into the pricepoint. They have had to replace a lot of them, it seems.
I know that a clutch only lasts 100 - 125K, but is this transmission failure something that has been a weak point, or have they just had bad luck? If so, what has gone wrong from the mid nineties? Or have auto transmissions just gotten that much better? opinions?
