When has a DIY "mechanic" earned his stripes?

Over the weekend, I finally managed to replace the brake pads on my 9-5.
Before I did so, I was somewhat scared because brake pads keep me safe
on the road. But, my thinking was that if I don't try, how am I ever going
to learn and get better.
After installing the brake pads, I made sure to do a test drive when the
roads were nearly empty.
So, when does a DIY mechanic earn his stripes? I've done the usual oil
change, spark plug replacement, tire rotation and brake bleeding. Short
of rebuilding an engine, when did you feel that you had become a DIY
"mechanic"?
Today, I was driving and the brakes felt good and I caught myself not
even thinking or worrying about the brakes. And the feeling of job well
done, the fact that I don't have to worry about brakes for another
35,000 miles and knowing that I don't have to bother with the bad service
at the one Saab dealership in town are worth the hours and effort.
Cheers,
jae
