I think there are two characteristics that set the mechanic apart from the DIY tinkerer: diagnostic ability and confidence. I did not consider myself a mechanic until I could dive into just about any job on any car and (with the proper tools, specifications, and procedures) know that I would get it done. Similarly, the ability to diagnose problems by careful analysis of symptoms only comes when the mechanic truly understands the systems of the car and their interoperability to an extent that most tinkerers do not.
However, none of this is meant to be discouraging. On the contrary, I think everyone benefits from working on their own vehicles and learning more about them. I started a lot of years ago with a shop manual, some cheap tools, a 73 Dodge Challenger, and a lack of money. If it didn't get fixed by me, it wasn't going to get fixed, so I learned. It took a long time and a lot of mistakes, broken stuff, and cursing to get where I am today.
