I've renewed my subscription for two years now, on a 2003 9-5. I called the OnStar representative earlier this week, to add minutes and consider renewing. My analog-based phone call was terrible. I got disconnected once, and had to ask the customer service rep to repeat herself throughout the static that was present during the entire conversation--in Washington, DC. It reminded me of my pre-digital phone days, and dissuaded me from renewing for an additional year. So, if OnStar helped us convert now, in exchange for a multi-year contract, it could keep me as a customer. Especially since I could share my Verizon minutes if I had a digital system. Since OnStar apparently plans to wait until analog is discontinued, I'll have long since moved on to a cell phone with bluetooth hands-free connectivity. Sure, nobody will be alerted when my airbag deploys, but quite frankly, the proliferation of cell phones has diminished the importance of this feature. And, I certainly have no plans to pay $700 to add it in my next car.
OnStar's decision to put off a digital upgrade for current subscribers is a business decision, and, in my view, on that will consign them to the dust heap of history.
