Here's a letter I sent to Onstar after receiving a renewal "warning" every week in the mail. My gripe (which is pretty much 180 out from what this thread is about) is that they are just inept at what they're spose to do for you and I will not have morons riding shotgun.
"Mr. Kubicki;
In response to your letter dated 23JUN05, it is my sincerest wish that you cease and desist in sending me further offers of renewal. I have as of now been saddled up with your inept service for almost one year, in which OnStar has proven to me time and time again that my money is better spent elsewhere. I am particularly outraged at one incident taking place at or around 0030 hrs on 19JUN05. I was expediting the delivery of a severely but not life-threateningly needy passenger to the nearest hospital in the area of Jacksonville Beach, FL. This just happened to be a Baptist Medical, a hospital I knew was within a four block radius of my current location. Now, in the interest of time I was not about to push the red button and wait 30 minutes for a $400 ride to the hospital I knew was four blocks away. Long story short, I dialed an advisor, stated that I needed a steer to the nearest hospital, and that this was not an emergency at the time. His response was to hang up on me. Thanks!
I have, in the past, been helped at times by some of your more helpful staffers, in that they have supplied me directions even though it is not part of my package. Brownie points for your company, but 8 out of 9 times they have been dead wrong, or the adress in question is not in your database. I can particularly recall the very first time I activated the system and asked the advisor what my exact latitude/longitude was. After 5 minutes of coaching your advisor on what N and W means, I received a 16 digit grid number that would have put me somewhere in Greenland. I was in Minnesota. I can hardly imagine paying $426 a year for that level of proficiency.
The tone in your letter suggests that Onstar is guilting customers into false sense of security with thinly veiled scare tactics. I for one do not appreciate that, being fully aware that SAAB makes a perfectly safe vehicle even without Onstar.
Also, it has come to my attention that, by disconnecting the battery, Onstar doesn't work.
It seems very plausible to me that in a left frontal offset collision, or any other frontal collision strong enough to trigger airbag deployment, the battery would cease to function. My car owner's manual even states that Onstar is potentially unavailable in a crash due to this.
In summary, I hope you take this as constructive criticism, even though I shall endeavour to make sure none of my future car purchases include OnStar nor that any of my friends do either. Quite a few of these have actually witnessed most of my negative experiences with Onstar already. It is with pleasure that I will deactivate the system on or before 12AUG05,
I am most certainly not fishing for freebies either, save yourselves the postage of a counteroffer.
Sincerely,"
Somehow the scare letters stopped and I never received any reply, as requested. If you wonder, it is possible to be severely but not life-threateningly in need of a doctor, which I found out one night as the DD.
