Any mechanic that can find the starter tucked in behind the engine will be able to put a 13mm wrench onto the positive battery cable lug nut and see if it loose.
If they can move the lug nut, that might very well be the problem.
For a lay person to do this, they have to be very careful since you are dealing with high strength voltage and could smoke things if the wrench is touching ground while doing this.
The best way is to disconnect the negative battery cable from battery to be on the safe side.
If the shop start sounding the warning bells when talking about testing the CKP sensor, they might not have the technology or the knowledge to do this?
What you do is to run the car until very hot and then leave it with hood closed for awhile (5-10min) and engine turned off.
You then quickly open the hood and measure the resistance over pin 1 and 2 on the CKP sensor toward the sensor. If you get a much higher reading than what the book says for your model/year, the sensor is failing.
