Couple of servicing questions (yes I've searched)

Hi All,
A couple of questions which are most likely repeated but I could not find direct answers for via searching, I'm doing the 120k km service on my 2000 Aero (4-sp auto), and as it's the first major one since I owned the car I'm doing an "everything" service, DIY where I can, assuming the worst about prior maintenance. I have already dropped the oil pan and checked for sludge and it was fine. So, questions:
1. For my 2000 Aero 4-sp auto (2.3 engine) my manual lists Dextron 3 as the recommended fluid. Lots of chatter here about 3309 - is that only for the later 5-speed auto?
2. My local indy had the following recommendation for getting as much fluid out as possible : drain the auto oil then run the motor and shift through neutral, drive, reverse for maybe 5-10 seconds each, this apparently pumps another litre or so out but won't harm the box. Sounds scary to me - opinions?
3. I'm putting a long belt back on as I've heard stories of even worse NVH issues with the short belt. Sounds like the top idler is a potential problem, should I replace it regardless of whether it feels ok or not?
That's all for now, thanks in advance, trying to get a WIS over bittorrent...
Cheers
Steve
