Thanks Scott and Les,
Re running the tranny, you confirm my initial reaction entirely! I've done a lot of work on classic motorcycle engines, but I've not the slightest idea what's inside an auto box so I perhaps wondered whether this might not be any issue for it. I'll do what I was originally planning and drain, refill, run and drain a few times to dilute whatever old oil is left in there.
My manual does say Dextron III but I was confused with all the talk of 3309 here, so wondered whether they just specced Dextron for Australia or something. But OK it makes sense that the later 5-sp box requires a more modern oil.
Will order up a top idler before doing the belt this weekend.
And in other more trivial news... some months ago I ordered a good used bonnet (hood for you guys up there) badge along with the parts required when I did my sludge check. I had some trouble getting the old badge off (yes I tried the dental floss to no avail...) and kind of lost interest. Tonight I finally prized it off without damaging anything... spent ages cleaning all the tape off both the car and the new (used) badge. After about an hour of fiddling around I offered up the new-old badge and hey presto! Wrong bl**dy badge! Doesn't fit. :-( Pegs are in the wrong position and it seems to have the concavity in the opposite direction to mine. It does say Saab-Scania, and is the right diameter, from memory the 9-3 has a smaller badge so it shouldn't be that, maybe a C900? So for the moment I'll be driving around in something that looks like it's been parked outside a dilinqents home...
Cheers
Steve
