Re: the Dealer sets the price for the parts, not GM
My thinking was to believe the guy running the parts department, that he couldn't get near $20 for the Bosch filter, which is only difference from the part that eEuroparts sells for less than $10 by the printing on the cardboard box in which it comes.
I looked at the fuel filter in the Saab part box--it was the exact same one that I had at home in a Bosch box from eEuroparts for under $10. Now, I understand that there may be costs involved in running a parts operation, but this sounds more like the $500 hammer that urban legend has it the defense department would pay. I blame this on GM if the parts counter guy can be believed when he said he couldn't get below $35 on a part sold in single units (with free shipping for orders for $39) to retail customers.
OK, so we own a car that doesn't benefit from large run parts production and lots of options in buying parts, but when it does use a standard part--why does Saab stick it to us with this sort of pricing policy?
Sure, the dealer could sell for less, and I was expecting to pay a premium for the convenience and genuine part from the dealer, but not that sort of excess--particularly when the source of much of the excess cost $4 - $8 for the same washers that cost less than a buck and over $50 for a standard filter that costs less than $10 seem to come from the part supplier not just the dealer.
I'd like to see more Saabs sold and see the GM partnership flourish, and I suppose that dealers and automakers--particularly those stuck with $2K additional health care costs per vehicle--have to attempt to make a profit; however, this was a disappointment to me. I don't really know if Saab prices are impacted directly by the health care costs, but it doesn't seem as if Saab has been profitable nevertheless. I often hear people talk about the high costs of parts as a reason for not getting a Saab and would like to see the company and dealer network do everything possible to combat that perception, which apparently is also a reality.
