My car threw a Check Engine light last night when half-way home and I will be taking it in today for a diagnosis. It still runs fine with lots of power so I am hoping it might just be a simple emissions sensor failure.
However, for the past 2 or 3 weeks I have been hearing what I thought was turbo "hoot" when backing off the gas rapidly. The strange part is that I had not heard it in the previous 6 years, but thought it might be a combination of the Forge by-pass valve installed last summer, the larger (and more horn like) air intake installed last fall, and springtime driving enthusiasm (heavy foot). But Saturday morning I noticed a large puff of gray smoke when I first started the car after being parked outside for two days in somewhat damp weather. I didn't notice anything Sunday or Monday - I checked. A co-worker just told me he noticed a similar puff last night when I was leaving work, 10 to 12 miles before the Check Engine light.
Now I wonder if the "turbo hoot" sound is actually the impeller grinding against the turbo housing.
How much of a job is it to change out a turbo?
Should I replace it with another Garrett T17, or go with the Aero's Mitsubishi unit, or even go with something like Jak Stoll's modified T25 unit? No other mods on the engine so the T25 is probably just crazy dreaming.
Thanks. Hopefully I'll get inexpensive news at the Dealer.
