You are correct - it was a faulty by-pass valve.....

I checked all the connections to the valve last night as I suspected it might be the culprit, but I didn't disassemble it. The Dealer ran his dianostics and told me it was a bad valve, wanted $250 total to install a new Bosch unit.

I said "No thanks", I have replacement a diaphragm at home. I asked if if would throw another code on the drive home, the Tech said "Not if you keep your foot out of the throttle." Just finished installing a new diaphragm - found I had two new ones - burning my thumb in the process. (What? Wait until the engine cools?)

I see now that the presence of two spare diaphragms included with my Forge valve was an indicator of their life expectancy. I am not sure I would have noticed the tear(s) in the diaphragm last night anyway. They are much smaller than what I expected to find and were almost hidden adjacent to the sealing surface.

$105 for the diagnostics to find out I had the repair part at home in my garage! Boy, do I feel stupid.
