In drive with the sport button engaged the 9-5 Aero has such massive torque and a nice easily invokeable kickdown that your comparisons to the VW might not be valid. Try one. The only downside is that you have to manually select SPORT each time you engage D, it won't default.
The steering wheel paddles on 2003's and up 9-5's are kinda' useless anyway compared to a slap shifter Tiptronic/Sentronic as you have to carefully select manual on the shift quadrant and then you can start paddling.
The superior systems is the 9-3SS slapshifter, much more natural slapping to the left without having to look and with out the gears below drive to navigate/avoid in the quadrant when using D.
