Hi Don,
Check the link below, it shows the 2000 9-5 I bought last year. Original owner had it dealer serviced exactly on the originally recommended 15k km intervals and did at least one 400km commute every week (Newcastle to Sydney). The PCV system had a few problems when I got it (degraded seal on the valve cover, one way valve to the throttle body was broken, one of the oil trap hoses was split). There was quite a bit of buildup on the walls of the timing case area, but the sump was basically clean and the oil pickup was perfect. Worth nothing is that there is a big difference between real "sludge" (oil turned to molasses-looking gunk) and the "coffee grounds" that were in my timing case.
I showed these pics to my indie and he said "that's nothing".
If you pull your valve cover and it's not worse than this, then there's a good chance your sump is fine. I like the peace of mind of having done it though, I did it myself but it's not an expensive job to have done.
