Engine Speed Dropping Out Posted by NCSaab [Email] ![]() ![]() |
Here's another case of the engine speed dropping out and quickly recovering. It almost feels like surging, but it is a definite drop in engine speed and power for a brief moment, then a recovery. This continues, almost like the engine is chugging along for a while then it clears up for a bit, only to come back.
I have read about this problem many times, dating back several years. The symptoms seem to be the same in all of these, but I have yet to read about a consistent correction to the root cause of this.
- 2000 9-5, 2.3l, 116k miles
- 2nd TB (replaced at 80k miles)
- TB clean as a whistle (on all visible surfaces)
- No TCS / Check Engine lamps lit
- New air filter
- New plugs
- When stopped and idling, problem stops (98%) when trans put in Neutral
- Does NOT happen when accelerating
- DOES happen when increasing engine load to maintain speed going uphill
- Outside air temp appears to be a non-issue
I have read in a few places here that the TB is a 'wear item'. I'm a heavy vehicle electronic controls/systems engineer w/ 20+ years experience. Statements like this are either hooey or indicate a serious design flaw. A belt is a wear item. A $300 closed-loop control component is not.
Could those of you who have experienced this and corrected it please let me know what the final fix to the root cause was? I would greatly appreciate your input before spending another $300 for a "...this might fix the problem". Thanks!!
