My '99 V6 has been leaving me 2-3 drops of oil on the garage floor for the past few months. Dealership "diagnosed" as oil filter plug needing a new O-ring - they replaced the O-ring, but the drip remained. I've got 82,000 miles on the car.
Finally got around to dropping it off at a local Indy, and he found oil seepage along the head gasket. He didn't want to do a head gasket replacement as major SAAB engine work isn't his thing, but he did give me the name of another garage staffed by a former SAAB dealer head tech, so I will likely drive over there for a second opinion. Oh, a tip of the cap to this indy, not only did he steer me to another shop, but he refused to charge me for his time to inspect on the lift.
Anyway, I know that most head gasket problems are related to the 4 cylinder 9-5's, so this post is more of a search engine FYI for the other V6 owners that might have a similar occurence.
Now I'm in the midst of a what-to-do...just do nothing and live with the drips until I trade the car in, or fix it to the tune of $1500+. Not sure what direction I'll be taking yet.
Can anyone give me a likelihood that the leak will one day rapidly turn critical and leave me with a ruined engine (AKA, what's the risk of a spontaneous "blown gasket")? My assumption is that the leak, while never going away, will remain a minor annoyance, and if it does get worse, it will be a slow and gradual increase in leak from a couple drops a night to 4-5, then 10, then 15....giving me plenty of time to bite the bullet and get it fixed if I so choose.
While the ultimate decision is mine to make, I guess I'm seeking sage advice from someone with much better knowledge of head gasket leaks than me to say either "Oh, its no big deal, you can go years like that" or "You'd better get that fixed, as you are running a big risk by leaving it alone".
