Before they used ethanol (EtOH), the oxygenate of choice was methyl tertiary butyl ether (MTBE).

Oxygenates give some emissions benefits, and they also make it possible to add some streams to the gasoline pool that otherwise have to go to other uses.

Both MTBE and EtOH have less energy in them than gasoline, but the energy penalty for using EtOH is about twice as big as for using MTBE.

Also, MTBE blends at a lower vapor pressure than EtOH. There is a spec on vapor pressure for emissions reasons: the higher the vapor pressure, the more evaporative emissions. Summertime vapor pressure specs are lower.

Butane makes great gasoline, because it's cheap, high octane, and high energy content. But when you blend gasoline with EtOH instead of MTBE, you can't get as much butane in before you reach the vapor pressure limit.

There are several other reasons why EtOH makes crummy gasoline, but I've already probably told you more than you care to know.

But just let me add this closing comment: everybody moans and groans about the oil compnay profits, but nobody seems to care much that we are letting Archer Daniels Midland, the main EtOH producer, empty our pockets with this ethanol racket they've forced on us. (End of rant.)

Best regards,

Dave
