I've seen two examples of 9-3's with sludge in the past week. One at the dealer and needs a $6,000 engine. Did not qualify for Saab's extended coverage. The other was at Patrick AFB Auto Hobby Shop. The car also needs an engine because of sludge but the owner is only going to flush the engine and then SELL IT. This is why I am telling all this. There are far too many of these cars out there now and too much risk to a new owner. Dropping the pan and looking at the pickup screen is one way to check in this case. I wouldn't rely on a shortcut like removing the valve cover since someone could be trying to make it look as though the engine is sludge free. Either get a CPO or find a Saab that you absolutely know the history of. Please be careful, this can be very expensive!
