Well, some cars are more reliable than others, but I'm interested in your statement "--from cars to bicycles to espresso makers--that the finer quality the machine, the more likely some sub-system will develop a problem."
I've got lots of bicycles, and usually ride a Serotta Ottrot with Record 10 speed - I'm not aware of the sub-system problems. I do have to keep the chain lubricated and occasionally adjust the derailleur cable tension or derailleur stops, if that's what you mean. Otherwise, there's really nothing that goes wrong. I will the say that the bike has been way more reliable than my 9-5.
