I was recently away for 2 months and returned to find my 2000Aero with a flat battery. Having read other accounts of battery consumption here I was not terribly surprised.
I gave it a half hour charge and drove around 15 minutes to work, mostly 80kmh zones, with traffic lights along the way.
At lunchtime I was surprised to find the car hard to start, I drove another 15 minutes to a destination and was very lucky to have the car restart, battery very flat, the TCS light was on all the way back. I have since charged the battery and all is so far ok, but I will obviously need a new battery before too long, however it got me thinking...
You hear a lot of battery consumption around this list, every other car I have had will charge quite acceptably given a 15 minute drive but the 9-5 did not... it really needed 12 hours on a charger.
It's now my opinion that the alternator simply does not charge enough during 'normal' driving. I can quite easily keep up with traffic driving under 3000rpm, mostly under 2000 in fact. If you give it a poke it might briefly go to 4-5000 but in traffic you usually have to back off before you're there for any length of time. Quite simply, the engine produces such a lot of power at such low revs that the alternator does not spin hard enough to really charge a sick battery.
Every other car I've owned would recover from a slightly sick battery with driving similar to that which I did recently, but with the 9-5 (especially auto) you simply never have to rev the engine.
Just a theory....
cheers
