I don't know how much difference there is in the engines, but in my '05 2.3T, I run 89 octane and get ~24+ on my daily commute (10 miles each way, rural roads).
On a recent trip, I was getting > 34 mpg with the cruise set at ~73mph. Even after two crashes which brought traffic to a halt (which forced us to essentially idle for 2 hours) and then lots of city driving (NJ), we still averaged ~32 mpg over 1,000 miles.
