I think US have banned them because it might have been a lawsuit sometime/somewhere and they decided it was better to ban to protect us.
I have seen many cars in Sweden having them installed but I also have heard stories about them going up in flames so my thoughts about them are split.
I think many of the fires can be contributed to faulty installation (leaking gasolin pipes)and lack of service. Yes, you did need to service them once in awhile.
If the spark plug/piezo electronic device is not firing but allow gas to accumulate and then suddenly fires, it could create an explosion.
But this is now 20 year old technology I'm talking about so hopefully a lot more safety devices has been implemented since then.
The most common brand name is Eberspächer (we use to call them "evighets brasa" in Sweden which is a play on words/sounding meaning "always on fire")
It is nice though to be able to park your car anywhere and just set the time with the dial on the dash to when the heater should kick in.
