If cars were going up in flames because of the gas heater we'd definitely hear about it in the news. I haven't heard of a single case. Plus Eberspächer et al would be out of business. Recently Peugeot has been hounded in the press here, because a couple of 307's went up in flames from malfunctioning servo pumps. If there really was a danger to the current gas heaters it would definitely be a major press issue.
I can't believe that people actually think it's dangerous when there are thousands of cars driving around with them both in Scandinavia, Germany and the rest of Europe without any problems.
But I guess it shouldn't surprise me coming from the same country that thinks 220V electricity is more dangerous than 110V and has a motoring organisation that outlaws signaling lights with white or clear exterior even though they shine just as yellow as any signaling light with yellow exterior.
