Well, I have an '01 9-5 Aero and my wife had an'01 9-3, which is presently with my son. Two entirely different cars. In my opinion, the 9-5 is not as "GM'ized" as the 9-3. I agree with others than posted to this thread that the 9-5 can't hold a candle to the old 9000's but then time marches on.
One attraction of the 9-3 over the 9-5 is that the 9-3 is still a hatchback. The "sport sedan" configuration of the 9-5 really detracts from one of the big advantages of the old 9000's - the monsterous cargo area. Yes, the 9-5 has the same depth and width in the cargo area but not the height. This may or may not be an issue for you.
All else being equal, I would choose the 9-5 because of his larger interior - you can handle 4 people confortably; bigger engine - the 2.3 turbo is quieter and offers better fuel economy; and styling - still looks like a Saab.
