My 2000 AERO has just started making the exact same noise. I also just replaced the belt with the short belt and replaced the upper idler pully. When I had the belt off, I spun each pully to see how they felt. The middle idler pully was still in good shape (upper one was dried out and raspy). The water pump pully was dead silent when spinning it backwards, however when spinning it the normal way, it made the clicking noise. I had never heard this before I took the belt off however.

About 3 days after changing the belt, I started to hear the noise when the car was running. It is the same as yours. Louder when the car first starts, then it goes away when it warms up.

My car no longer is covered by the CPO (under 100k, but over 6 years), so I will have to pay the dealer to replace the water pump - something that I don't want to attempt after reading about how hard it is.

Take it into the dealer and see what they say. Then let me know as well.
