I use 5W/40 (Turbo Diesel Truck & SUV) 188,700 miles Posted by MI-Roger [Email] (#882) [Profile/Gallery] (more from MI-Roger) on Fri, 19 Jan 2007 17:19:17 In Reply to: What synthetic oil to use on high mileage 9-5SE, 9-5 Talladega, Fri, 19 Jan 2007 14:40:16 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
Usually Mobil 1 as a local discount auto place always seems to have lots of it in stock. The one or two times I couldn't find Mobil 1, I bought Shell Rotella T synthetic in the same weight. Both are marketed to turbo diesel engines, and both are SL rated oils rather than the newer SM rating.
Apparently the SM oils are less destructive to your catalytic converter if you are burning oil, but contain far less anti-wear compounds.
Mobil DELVAC 1 is the trucker's version of Mobil 1 5W/40, but one gallon jugs of this are $4 to $6 more than four quarts of M1.
I used Valvoline's high-mileage vehicle oil in our Chevy Astro van for the last two years we owned it (5W/30 weight, and 120K miles) and it seemed to work better than 5W/30 oils without the "special" high mileage additives. Our Saabs only get synthetic because of the turbos.
