The engine coolant temp sensor is on the thermostat housing on the left hand end (driver's side)of the cylinder head. You can test it by checking the ohm resistance at the following coolant temperature:
-30C 20-30 ohms
-20C 7.0 to 11.4 ohms
20C 2.1 to 2.9 ohms
40C 1.0 to 1.3 ohms
60C 0.565 to 0.670 ohms
80C 0.295 to 0.365 ohms
90C 0.24 to 0.26 ohms
110C 0.14 to 0.16 ohms
The above values are taken from the Haynes manual on the 9-5.
We had the same problem with our 2004 9-5 aero and it was due to a bad coolant temperature sensor.
