the 'stats seem to fail in the open position on the 9-5 and 9000s (my observation, no statistics to back this up). This is good. it is also consistent with what you are seeing.
1 - definitely change the 'stat
it seems that most folks (on both the 9-5 and 9000 board) will change the temp sensor at the same time as the 'stat. Personally I don't understand that. But on the other hand, the temp sensor is inexpensive and easy enough to replace, so why not? I suppose it is a hedge against a mis-diagnosis of the 'stat.
2 - change the temp sensor if you are so inclined.
brand: if you read the 9000 board you will be warned against all other brands of 'stat except the OEM.
however my dealer sells the Wahler and says "it *is* OEM" <shrug>. Wahler is a british brand and well regarded.
so the last 'stat I put into the 9000 was a Wahler. hasn't imploded yet, seems just fine. I've not replaced the 'stat on my 9-5 yet.
I read somewhere that some guy was fanatical about his 'stats and would test every single one he ever installed and found a remarkable amount of bad 'stats out of the box. I wish I could find that link.
3 - I think a Wahler is OK and you can apply the savings to your temp sensor (or use it to take the little lady out for dinner)
