Just got my 2004 Aero (33,400 on the odo) back today after 3 days in my local dealer's service department. Had the coolant leak / bypass valve problem that seems to be so common in SAABs. I can still smell a bit of burning coolant when the car shuts down --- mechanic told me it takes a day or two to burn off.
Other issues that were discovered when they had it on the lift:
Broken front engine mounts (replaced)
Bad throttle body (replaced)
Leaking rear shocks (on national back order, so will be replaced at 35k service)
Faulty torque rod (replaced)
All were replaced under warranty, but the number of repairs makes me quite nervous given the low mileage of the car. I basically drive it back and forth between home and work, about 60 miles a day on the highway, so it seems odd that it should have all of these issues this early on. I'm meticulous about service (dealer service only) on this car -- all majors, plus oil/lube every 5k, tire rotation every 5k, etc. Wondering if this is a spectre of things to come with this car.
I was going to buy it when my lease expires, but now I'm having second thoughts. I'm a car enthusiast and even raced a bit back in the day, but reliability and low repair costs are a big factor for me. These repairs would have been costly if not under warranty. I don't even want to think about how much I'll have to spend when the car hits 60k.
With this in mind, and as much as it pains me to say it... I'm seriously contemplating taking my business to the boys from "the land of the rising sun" for my next car purchase. The Japanese vehicles may not make the heart pump, but they generally don't hit you so hard in the wallet either.
This is going to be a tough decision. Thoughts?
