I bought my current Saab (2001 9-5 Aero) as a CPO vehicle, which had about 2 years left on the warranty when I got it. It has been pretty much trouble free (DIC, replaced under recall warranty before actually failing, various light bulbs, trunk wire harness, and that's it.) However, BEFORE I bought the car from the Saab dealer (out of town, basically a Caddy franchise with a new Saab dealership tacked on, and a clueless addition,at that...) I still insisted on seeing the internal Iris report.

The Iris printout will show you exactly what has been done to the car under warranty at Saab facilities. At 52K, there's admittedly a lot of water under the bridge past the original warranty, but the Iris will show you whether the car had any unusual problems during its first 3 years. If you look up the dealership codes for each repair, you can also figure out where the car "grew up."

We almost bought a used 9-5 wagon from an indy Saab used car joint. They didn't "know" anything about the Iris system, but when I got hold of the report on the car, it showed 39 warranty incidents, many of which were BIG trouble: multiple turbo replacements, multiple SID replacements, LOTS of other extensive electrical and mechanical repairs. The word "lemon" came to mind.

The car I bought had virtually nothing on the Iris except for normal oil changes, scheduled maintenance, light bulbs and a SID replacement.

Any Saab dealership should be willing to print you out the Iris report on a car - all you need is the VIN. There's no confidentiality issue, as the Iris doesn't show the ownership info.
