I certainly recommend to have a prepurchase inspection done, not just because I do them but because of what I have seen through the years inspecting cars.
Just last week, I had a new customer in with a 2003 9-5 for a 50K service and he had been going to the local dealer for all regular services since car was new.
The starter lug nut was loose, valve cover bolts were loose, left/right parking cable brackets were loose, missing screws in front spoiler/air guide. It had a minor oil leak from head gasket and the latest PCV update was not done. Minor steering click from column. Software updates available for fuel, transmission and ACC computers.
This car was in a pretty good condition and many of the small items should have been taken care of long ago since the dealer mechanics must, just like me, know about the loose fastener issues on these cars at these specific places.
The only thing they would have needed to do was to take a wrench to the bolt or nut and tightened it, just like I did when they serviced the car at earlier times.
The other thing with an inspection is that it might reveal that the car has been in an accident and that would alter the price dramatically on some cars all depending on how good of a repair is done.
But, the inspection is only as good as the mechanic doing it. So if a sloppy mechanic is running over the car to make some quick money, he might not see that much.
