Regarding the automatic transmission:
I have the automatic in my '06 9-5 and I am quite impressed with it. I had always owned manual transmission cars until the 9-5, and I was ready to walk away from the car if I didn't like the auto tranny. Honestly, though, I feel like the auto tranny in Sport mode (I pretty much always turn on Sport mode unless the roads are snowy) does a better job than I ever did with the 5-speed in my 9-3. It feels very sporty and seems to shift (or not shift) at just the right times. When I want to, I can put the car into the manual mode to hold it in 3rd around corners, but I don't find myself using that option too often. I use the manual mode more for starting in 2nd gear when I'm trying to pull out of snowy parking spot, etc.
In the end, though, it will be up to you whether you like the auto or not. There are many here who will scream that a sport sedan should not have an auto, but you have to go with what feels the most natural to you. Try to get the dealer to let you take the car for a whole day, or overnight, so you can really drive alot to decide if you like the auto tranny. This is what my dealer did and it was very helpful.
