They all do that. My 2001 aero had all four wheels go bad over time. It is always the rim, the spokes are fine. Kerbing will accelerate the process but it eventually happens even on pristine rims.
I eventually got fed up with the ugly scabby look, that plus one bent rim prompted replacement with 18in ASA AR1s for $179 per wheel. I think ASA is somehow associated with BBS, but hopefully their clearcoat process is better!
I now have a full size spare, which is excellent, one completely unserviceable bent wheel and 2 scabby but otherwise useable wheels, any takers?....oh thought not.
