The diagrams and definitions posted accurately show cupping in my opinion.
I have experienced this uneven wear on rear Bridgestone Potenza tires on my wife'e 2001 Aero. It quickly worsened to the condition shown in the photos at the link below. All this, despite 5K mile rotation, and alignement.
Our Avon 550's now have almost 30K and are beginning to show some cupping despite being "flipped" on their rims at about 15K to premit side to side rotation.
