mystery part found in front strut

I was changing a tire when these parts fell out from underneath the dustcover on the right front strut of my 2003 Saab Aero wagon. Does anyone know what this...er...was? The strut appears to work fine, and there is no leakage anywhere. Was it important? I have a CPO warrantee...is this worth replacing?
Thanks for the help.
