I've seen this assertion before on both 9-5s and 9000 models (and presumably 9-3s and NG900s). It doesn't stand up to a heat transfer analysis. The thermal conductivity of the oil pan and the joint up to the block is very high, and there is a large surface area connected to the oil. When is there a lot of heat in the exhaust? When you are going fast, and there's all that moving air cooling the outside of the oil pan. What happens when you shut off the engine with a hot exhaust? The heat capacity of the exhaust pipe is negilibible compared to the oil, oil pan, and the rest of the engine. Park your car for 10 minutes and feel the exhaust and the oil pan - which one is hotter? The oil pan, I'll betcha.
Now, all that said, change your Mobil 1 every 5000 miles.
