Having had numerous - too many for my wife to smile about - 9000's, I am on my first 9-5, an '01 Aero. I've had the car for 2 years and 30k miles with very few problems. The traditional ACC Code 08 was the only real problem that I've encountered. I'm currently replacing the front wheel bearings but that should be considered normal maintenance.

Compared to the 9000's, the 9-5 is more refined, more comfortable, less utilitarian (with the sports sedan set-up) and less Saab and more GM. I have read horror stories about sludging problems, ECM issues, etc. but luckily that hasn't been my experience. The 9000's had their share of problems - most notably the infamous heater core failure - but they did offer more room. The hatchback was a pick-up truck for me while the kids were in college. Other families would rent a trailer or a van to bring or retrieve their kids from college. I did it in a 9000.
Anyway, since the lowest mileage 9000 is probably in the 80,000's and is going on 9 years old, you may have little choice.

I would look for one that was a CPO vehicle. That way your exposure to major problems would be covered - at least for a while. Alternately, find a 9-5 that is being sold by a Saab enthiusiast, who hopefully will have taken care of the car.

Good Luck!
