Julia - just to clarify, the car has never failed me or left me stranded. It is a fast, comfortable, and safe ride for me and my kids. The parts were replaced quickly and without hassle, and I consider it to be a reliable car (or I wouldn't drive my kids around in it).
Check this board and you'll find that a relatively small number of parts cause the majority of problems, and these can be easily addressed. I am just recommending that you buy a CPO car to avoid any major outlays of cash should you run into any of these problems. It's a great warranty.
There are quite a few people here who have happily driven their 9-5s well over 100,000 miles with few problems.
Hope that helps ...
