David. There is a very easy way to verify if the timing chain is the culprit. Chains become noisy+ sloppy when they are stretched beyond allowable specs. There is actually a tsb out there regarding this. It is a diy, but does involve some disassembly to access the tensioner located on pass side - us- on back side of engine. You remove the tensioner, and measure the actual distance the bit has come out. Beyone a certain mm , replacement is recommended. Just as important, if the timing chain is stretched, your balance shafts chain most likely is also. The supporting bits of those 2 chains all add up to sig. replacement $$. If your mechanic did not check the tensioner, and is recommending this repair action based on hearing, change your mechanic. - good luck and Regards, Tom S.
