03 Linear w/ oil in cylinders: is this sludge-related?

Our 2003 9-5 wagon (70 K miles, mostly highway) had an intermittent oil light three weeks ago, and I found it to be a quart and a half low. Then this weekend (about 500 miles later) the CEL came on, and it was a quart low again.
Brought it in to my indy yesterday, and he says the CEL was from a plug fouled with oil. He has to do a tear-down to make the diagnosis, but thinks the oil is getting in past the rings or through a valve guide. The car has had oil changes every 5K and is otherwise up to date on maintanance. Needless to say, major engine surgery at only 70K is very disturbing. This is our fifth SAAB, and all the previous ones lived well over 100K with no engine problems other than leaky seals.
What is the likelihood that this is related to oil sludging? We got the oil sludge letter last June, so I called SAAB USA and they say I have to bring it to the dealer and they will make a decision about whether it is covered.
If the problem isn't going to be covered by SAAB USA, I'd rather have my indy do the work, so does anyone know if this is typical of a sludged engine, or is there some other likely cause?
