Oil consumption and sludge are two separate problems, although sludge can lead to excessive oil consumption on account of it blocking lubrication, resulting in things wearing out. Also, other than leaking valve stems or worn out rings, the car could be taking in oil through a failed seal on the compressor side of the turbo. It is also possible that a terminally defective PCV system is sucking oil into the intake. Beyond that, there are probably some defects that, while possible, require some imagination to predict. I am rulingout a failed turbine side seal b/c your mechanic detected an oil fouled plugs. But if the other three plugs are clean and only one is fouled, that pretty well points to rings or valve stems, as anything else would get oil onto all the plugs, not just one.
