I replaced the shaft and stop arm on the driver's side (used the one piece aluminum shaft with integrated stop arm from a site sponsor) last month.
I'm 6'3", 230#, and let me tell you, it was no easy task wedging myself under there to get at everything. No need to do anything with the steering wheel. There are two approaches for body positioning: 1) lay on back across door threshold with feet outside car on ground, or 2) put driver's seat completely flat, and lie on back with feet sticking out over back of flat seatback toward the rear window.
I went with position number 1.
A flashlight that can emit a spread beam pattern rather than a tight beam helps a lot. If you have to replace the shaft, a small mirror is invaluable to allow you to see inside the heater box as you work.
Most of the screws that you need to remove are simple to access, although one or two I could only loosen using a right angle ratchet type tool with a one inch Phillips head screw bit attached. Thankfully local Harbor Freight Tools around the corner had these with 12 bits for under $5.
All told it took me a couple hours total, most of the time due to feeling around in the dark at painful angles, and having to cut the broken shaft with a hacksaw blade to get it out of the heater box. Now that I've done it once I could do it again in 30-45 minutes. Stop arm replacement only would take less than that.
