As an tightwad, I have usually bought used cars and kept them a long time. I don't like payments, so I figure it's better to put bucks into maintaining a *good* used car than make payments on a new (or even newer) one.
Sure, with a new one you don't have maintenance or surprises, but if you're forking over $400-500/month you're paying out a pretty good chunk of change for that privilege--$4800 to $6,000--which is several times a typical year's maintenance on a decently maintained used car. Even a Saab.
It depends on one's tolerance for the unexpected, depth of pocket and maybe most important, whether you care about having a new or close to new car. For some that's important, others could care less.
The right answer is what's right for the individual.
