Yes, truly weird logic...... Truly weird logic...
1) You just can't make a viable financial argument for replacing a servicable used car with a new one.
2) In my experience, when folks do trade up it's always just after they've spent the big bucks on repairs. After all, whose gonna' get rid of a car that hasn't cost them anything yet? Then bang, $1,500 turbo or other major repair and folks are ready to sell/trade. It's an extremely common pattern in the car biz. That's how as a salesperson you know they're ready to trade, they just spent big time on the old car. It's like they figure they gotta' sell it before it bites them again and having just spent big money makes the karma of selling the car more palatable, but see item 1).....
3) Face the reality, you don't NEED a new car, you WANT one. If you do trade up it an emotional issue not a rational or economic one.
4) A 2000 9-5 is a very, very nice Saab, nicer than the nicest 9-3SS IMHO. Nicest interior wood, still with the weather band, umbrella holders and rear puddle lights, hard to tell from a new one for non-Saab folks. And at 82k, not even close to having any serious wear issues. And I wouldn't compare a '97 900 vert to a 9-5, as 9-5s are far more reliable and less troublesome. NG900 verts can eat $dough$, especially the electric top.
5) Safety is one issue that new cars generally exceed older cars and that's an invaluable commodity especiall for family folks, but a new 9-5 has almost the same saftey features as a 2000, save for the dual stage front airbags and stability control and any 9-5 has excellent safety ratins is in a statistically safer class of cars to offset that.
