It's really just a psychological thing, I think. Unless the box is way out over the hood, you don't really see it. But there are some limits as to where you can attach the box, unless you want to start drilling additional holes in the Thule. By using the predrilled holes, you're pretty much assured of getting a balanced load no matter how you pack it.
