I'd like to think a 9-5 SportWagon is nicer, and cooler, than a Passat wagon, or any other high-line wagon like a BMW 5 Series, Mercedes E Class, Volvo or Audi. Stop and go driving in a 2000 Aero will get you 18-19-20 mpg, highway 26-30+ depending on speed and wind, but that's with 230hp and great, diesel like, torque.
Was the TDI a stick? The auto in the 9-5's is really a good one. 2000 was a nice year for a 9-5, nicest interior wood and leather. And if you're lucky your 2000 Aero SportWagon will have the coolest Saab wheels of all time, the BBS multi-piece.
