Just remember this isnt a Saab only issue. A freind had a timing belt fail on her Honda causing $2000+ in damage. THis was at just over 100k miles. Honda told her "too bad, so sad".
Honestly, buying a new engine is WAY cheaper than scrapping the car. Yeah it might be $3000, but consider the cost in finding a new car that is in as good of condition is going to be far more than the repair bill.
