Well for starters you can't change out the center idler pulley without pulling the engine, if you stay with the long serp belt.
With the short belt mod this pulley is bypassed so there is no need to change it.
With the short belt mod, be sure to get the upper rear idler pulley changed when you replace the belt.
Just had the same thing done to my 2002 9-5 linear. Changed the belt a little early before 60K when the water pump was replaced.
