I changed out the pulleys, tensioner, and put a long belt in at 66K. I tried the short belt for about a week, but the increased vibration when turning at idle (like when parallel parking) was really a pain and it was clear that the short belt did not work well. My indie found a long belt and that system has worked well. Go with the long belt setup.
Now, if Saab would give us a water pump that would last more than 40K we'd be doing well...
